MSI 20 years of laptops and 2024 new products

Commercial cooperation with MSI

MSI released its first laptop in 2004 and this year celebrates 20 years in the laptop market. The company invited io-tech to visit a celebration event in Taiwan to remember its most significant laptops and innovations over the years and to check out the new products of 2024.

2004-2024

MSI’s first laptop was the 15-inch M510C, which weighed 2.9 kg and was designed with quality in mind. Inside you could find Intel Pentium M processor, Intel 855PM chipset, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 or 9700 graphics card. It was possible to configure the storage space up to 120 gigabytes. Serial and parallel connections, a couple of USB 2.0 connectors and two network connections were found on the back. The operating system was Windows XP.

The first overclockable gaming laptop GX600 was released in 2007. The screen was 15.4 inches, the graphics were handled by the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics card and the processor was Intel’s Core 2 Duo. HDMI and VGA were available as display connections.

Released in 2008, the Wind U100 was the world’s first mini-laptop with a 10-inch 1024×600 resolution screen, which was a significant improvement over previous mini-laptops with a 7-inch screen. Inside you could find IIntel Atom N270 1.6 GHz processor, 512 MB or a gigabyte of central memory and SATA storage space up to 160 gigabytes.

Launched in 2013, the GS70 Stealth was once the world’s thinnest gaming laptop and very popular. It sold more than 10 million copies. Inside was a 4th generation Intel Core processor, GeForce GTX 765M graphics card, 256GB Super RAID + 750 gigabyte HDD (7200 RPM).

In 2014 MSI introduced exceptional GT80 Titan SLI, which was equipped with a full-size mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX switches and integrated number keys on the mouse touchpad. The screen was 18.4 inches with Full HD resolution and the laptop weighed 4.5 kilograms. The most powerful configuration used an Intel Core i7 5950HQ processor, 32 gigabytes of central memory and a storage space of 1024 GB Super RAID 3 + 1 terabyte HDD (7200 RPM). Other features were a Bluray drive and 4+1 speakers.

2016 saw the introduction of the 3.6 kg backpack-portable VR One, which was intended for use with virtual glasses. The battery life was promised to be 90 minutes and the interior had Intel’s 6th generation Core processor and a GeForce GTX 10 series graphics card.

In 2023 MSI joined forces with the car manufacturer Mercedes-AMG, and with the cooperation, the Stealth 16 laptop was released, which is equipped with a 3840×2400 resolution OLED screen. The interior has Intel’s 13th generation Core i9 processor, a maximum of 64 gigabytes of central memory and a GeForce RTX 4060 or 4070 graphics card

Over the years, the company has released several specially themed gaming laptops that have been decorated in terms of color and materials to match the theme, such as the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla themed laptop and the Dragonshield Edition designed by a Star Wars artist.

The new laptops of 2024

The flagship laptop of 2024 is the Titan 18 HX, equipped with Intel’s latest and most powerful Core i9-14900HX mobile processor and GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. The 18-inch Mini LED backlit screen supports 3840×2400 resolution and 120 hertz refresh rate and is VESA DisplayHDR 1000 certified. Wi-Fi 7 is also supported

Another new heavy gaming laptop is the Raider 18 HX, which can also be configured with a Core i9-14900HX processor and a GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, but the cooling power is enough up to 250 watts.

The Crosshair laptop with a Core i7-14700HX processor will be available in two models, 16HX and 17HX, which are equipped with either a 16- or 17-inch screen and a 2560×1440 resolution. It is possible to configure the graphics card up to GeForce RTX 4070.

Two models 16HX and 17HX will also be available of the Sword laptop with a Core i7-14700HX processor, which are equipped with either a 16- or 17-inch screen and a 2560×1600 resolution. It is possible to configure the graphics card up to GeForce RTX 4070

On display was the company’s first handheld game computer Claw A1M, which has just been released and runs Windows 11 powered by Intel’s new Core Ultra processors. The device is advertised with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, which is a model with six P-cores and eight E-cores, which also has two energy-efficient ”Low Power” E-cores and in addition an Intel Arc Graphics processor and an NPU artificial intelligence processor (Neural Processing Units).

The Claw A1M has a 7-inch IPS screen with Full HD resolution 1920×1080 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 120 hertz. The device has 16 gigabytes of LPDDR5 central memory and it is possible to have M.2 SSD storage up to a terabyte. The device weighs 675 grams and the connections are supported by Wi-Fi 7.

There is no information about availability and prices in Finland yet

The Cyborg 14 aimed at more affordable gaming is equipped with a maximum Core i7-13620H processor and a 14-inch screen with Full HD+ 1920×1200 resolution and a refresh rate of 144 hertz. It is possible to configure the graphics card up to GeForce RTX 4060.

The Thin 15 is an Intel model equipped with a Core i7-13620H processor and a GeForce RTX 4050 graphics card, while the Thin 15 AI has AMD’s Ryzen 8040 series processor equipped with a GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card. Both have a 15.6-inch screen with a 1920×1080 resolution and a 144 hertz refresh rate.

Stealth 18 AI Studio uses Intel’s new Meteor Lake codenamed Core Ultra 9 185H processor and GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. Special attention has been paid to the display side, and an 18-inch UHD+ 3840×2400 resolution Mini LED backlit panel with a refresh rate of 120 hertz is used.

The Pulse laptop will be available in two models, 16 AI and 17 AI, which, as the name suggests, are equipped with either a 16- or 17-inch screen with a 240 Hz refresh rate and 2560×1440 resolution. The processor is Core Ultra 9 185H and the graphics card can be configured up to GeForce RTX 4070.

The Summit E13 AI Evo is equipped with a Core Ultra 7 155H processor and the 13.3-inch touch screen supports 1920×1200 resolution.

Prestige 13 AI Evo with a magnesium aluminum body weighs 990 grams and is equipped with a Core Ultra 7 155H processor and a 13.3-inch OLED screen supports 2880×1800 resolution.

The Prestige 16 laptop will be available in two models, 16 AI Studio and 16 AI Evo, equipped with a 16-inch 3840×2400 resolution OLED panel. The processor is Core Ultra 9 185H and the graphics card can be configured up to GeForce RTX 4070. The magnesium aluminum frame weighs 1.5-1.6 kilos.

MSI has already released Alpha and Bravo laptops, which refer to AMD’s Ryzen processor-equipped laptops. On AMD laptops the dragon mascot has changed to a green bird and the textured logo on the cover has been redesigned.
